    SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

By the end of this collaboration, you should understand that

    • you are a necessary and integral part of the classroom community.
    • you should feel comfortable asking questions and participating in classroom discourse, no matter your language background.
    • quantitative literacy empowers people by giving them tools to think for themselves, to ask intelligent questions of experts, and to respectfully question authority confidently.
    • quantitative reasoning is important for decision-making in our democratic society.

By the end of this collaboration, you should be able to

    • work effectively in groups.
    • understand the course expectations and what is necessary to succeed in the course.

PROBLEM SITUATION: THE VACATION PROPERTY PUZZLE

A woman writes the following question to Ask Marilyn, a newspaper help columnist:

Nine members of our family will be renting a vacation property. The total rental fee is $3,600 for 10 days. People will be staying for a varying number of days. I say the first step in figuring how much each person will owe for his or her share is to divide the fee by nine [—the number of people that will be going on the vacation]. My husband says we should start by dividing the fee by 10—the number of days we have the rental. Who is right?1

    (1) Discuss the problem situation with your group. Make sure everyone understands the problem. Investigate the two methods proposed by the husband and wife to determine the monetary implications.

    (2) Explore different solutions to the Vacation Property Puzzle. As a group, pick a solution to share.
