Then answer the questions below.
(1) According to the article, why is increasing physical activity the key to losing excess weight?
(2) What is resting energy expenditure?
Calculating resting energy expenditure (REE) might be important for those seeking to lose weight—its usefulness is still being studied. But calculating REE has an important role in medical care as well. Critically ill patients under hospital care must be provided with sufficient calories to cover their REE and other energy needs.31 Certain kinds of medical treatment cause patients to lose weight, and studying REE could help doctors and researchers understand the causes of weight loss.32
(3) Using an online calorie calculator, such as the one at https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/weight-loss/in-depth/calorie-calculator/itt-20402304, estimate the number of daily calories you need to maintain your current weight.
(4) REE accounts for around 60−75% of total daily calorie needs. Using your result from Question 3, estimate your resting energy expenditure.
(5) Suppose the heights for a family of four are the following:
Father: 6 feet, 3 inches.
Mother: 5 feet, 7 inches.
Daughter: 5 feet, 4 inches.
Son: 5 feet, 2 inches.
- What is the average (mean) height of the members of this family, in feet and inches?
- Using the formula c = 2.54 ∙ i, where c is height in centimeters, and i is height in inches, what is the average (mean) height of this family in centimeters? Round to the nearest cm.
