    Reading Questions

    1. What is the definition of pressure, and what are its common units in the English and metric systems?
    2. What is the formula for the force exerted on a plate of area \(A\) submerged horizontally at a depth \(s\)?
    3. According to Pascal's principle, if you know the pressure at a specific depth, do you need to worry about the orientation (horizontal or vertical) of a surface at that depth to determine the pressure on it?

    1) [Technology Required] A rectangular dam is \(40\) ft high and \(60\) ft wide. Compute the total force \(F\) on the dam when

    a. the surface of the water is at the top of the dam and

    b. the surface of the water is halfway down the dam.
