    Math 1930: Introduction to Mathematical Sciences is an open textbook built for students at Northwest Technical College. It satisfies MnTransfer Goal Area 4 (Mathematical/Logical Reasoning) and is designed for students with developmental to college-level math backgrounds.

    This course focuses on quantitative reasoning as a practical skill — reading data critically, building and interpreting models, and using spreadsheet tools that show up in real work. Statistics, proportional reasoning, financial math, and Excel logic are woven together with that goal in mind.

    How the book is organized

    The book is divided into four modules, each covering roughly four weeks of the semester:

    • Module 1 — Foundational Quantitative Reasoning: Large numbers, proportions, unit conversions, percentages, and weighted averages.
    • Module 2 — Statistics and Data Visualization: Sampling, data types, graphs, descriptive statistics, correlation, and probability.
    • Module 3 — Linear Modeling and Spreadsheet Logic: Equations, slope, Excel formulas, Boolean logic, and IF statements.
    • Module 4 — Advanced Modeling and Trendlines: Exponential growth and decay, compound interest, loans, quadratic models, and Excel trendlines.
