    Applied Calculus Corequisite Workbook

Victoria Dominguez, Cristian Martinez, and Sanaa Saykali

This document serves as a Corequisite Workbook for an Applied Calculus course. It is vitally important for students who take this course (and its corequisite) to have a thorough and complete refresher of Algebra skills needed for Calculus. These problems may be assigned as in-class practice problems, and can be also assigned as homework, to be graded and counted toward the Applied Calculus corequisite final grade.

Supported in part by the Academic Senate for California Community College’s Open Educational Resources Initiative.

    INTRODUCTION TO THE CO-REQUISITE CLASSROOM

So, what is meant by a student-centered learning environment and how does it differ from the traditional math classroom? In this learning model, the focus of activity shifts from the teacher to the learner. Class time is spent on discussion, collaborative work, and engagement with other brains-on activities. Additionally, during class, teaching and learning is tailored to fit the needs of small groups of students as they work through these activities and review prerequisite skills in a just-in-time approach. This learning model employs a teacher-guided-discovery process that allows the instructor to identify gaps in student understanding and use class time to remediate those gaps before moving on to the next topic. In summary, the student should expect to engage in the following activities during class.

    • Group-work to motivate and introduce key concepts for each of the course topics
    • Group-work to review skills and work through skill-building problems from topics previously discussed in class
    • Class discussions
    • Mini lectures as necessary to close gaps in concept mastery or skill attainment
    • Mini on-the-spot Round Robin poster presentations
    • Peer-review feedback
    • Collaborate with classmates to master transfer-level Applied Calculus

Furthermore, the student should expect to do the following outside of class:

    • Complete the assigned reading and homework
    • Review course material daily
    • Work through review problems to prepare for exams and quizzes
    • Write reading responses
