Use these steps to complete each addition question.
- Add the ones to the ones.
- Add the tens to the tens.
- Add the hundreds to the hundreds.
Example A:
\begin{aligned}
23 \\
+56\\
\hline
\end{aligned}
- Add the ones to the ones. 3 ones + 6 ones = 9 ones. Write the answer in line with the ones in the equation.
\begin{aligned}
23 \\
+56\\
\hline 9
\end{aligned} - Add the tens. 2 tens + 5 tens = 7 tens
\begin{aligned}
23 \\
+56\\
\hline 79
\end{aligned}
The sum of 23 + 56 = 79
Example B:
\begin{aligned}
372 \\
+415\\
\hline
\end{aligned}
- Add the ones. 2 ones + 5 ones = 7 ones
\begin{aligned}
372 \\
+415\\
\hline 7
\end{aligned}
- Add the tens. 7 tens + 1 ten = 8 tens
\begin{aligned}
372 \\
+415\\
\hline 87
\end{aligned}
- Add the hundreds. 3 hundreds + 4 hundreds = 7 hundreds
\begin{aligned}
372 \\
+415\\
\hline 787
\end{aligned}
The sum of 372 + 415 = 789
