The teacher said to the student,

    "Multiply \(3 \times 7\)."

The teacher announced to the students that were going to be learning about operations.

The students didn't understand. This was a mathematics class. They didn't want to do operations. That was for doctors to learn.

The teacher said, "You do operations in this class all the time."

"WE DO?" answered the puzzled students.

Now they were a little skeptical.

But they were a little curious, too.

When they went home that night, they proudly told their parents that they performed operations in school.

Most parents looked at each other and smiled weakly.

    • 7.1: Operations and Properties
This exercise set is designed to give you an understanding of what "binary operations" are, and to give you a deeper understanding for the commutative, associative and distributive properties. To do this, we're going to define and work with some nonsense operations.
