    1. Write an expression for the following sequences of operations:

    (a)  Add 3 to x and double the result.

    (b) Subtract 1 from x, then divide the result by A.

    (c) Divide x by 2, then add 4, then take the square root of the result.

    2. To calculate the balance after investing P dollars for two years at 5% interest, Sharif adds 5% of P to P, and then adds 5% of the result of this calculation to itself. Jared multiplies P by 1.05, and then multiplies the result of this by 1.05 again.

    (a) Write an expression for each calculation.

    (b) Are Jared and Sharif’s calculations equivalent? Justify your answer.

    3. Eric plans to spend $20 on ice cream cones at $1.25 each. Write an equation whose solution is the number of ice cream cones he can buy, and then solve that equation.

    4. A town’s population P, in thousands, t years after it was founded is given by the function P = 30+2p

    (a) Write an equation whose solution is when the town’s population is 50,000.

    (b) When is the town’s population 50,000?
