2: Cartesian Coordinate System

( \newcommand{\kernel}{\mathrm{null}\,}\)

Mathematical figures in algebra are drawn in a system or plane called the rectangular coordinate system. Figures are particularly important for giving a visual representation of relationships between two variables.

  • 2.1: Definition and Label Quadrants
The two perpendicular number lines intersect at the point (0,0) and is called the origin.
  • 2.2: Ordered Pairs
Ordered pairs are pairs of numbers used to locate a point in the rectangular coordinate plane and written in the form (x,y) , where x is the x-coordinate and y is the y-coordinate.
  • 2.3: The Distance Formula
The previous section taught how to plot points in the rectangular coordinate plane. This section teaches how to find the distance between any two points in the plane.
  • 2.4: Applied Examples
In this section, apply the distance formula to find the lengths of line segments.
