Chapter 4: Functions

( \newcommand{\kernel}{\mathrm{null}\,}\)

In this chapter, all the groundwork we've laid in the first three finally starts to come to fruition. Functions are everywhere in math, sciences, business, technology, etc! We rely on algebraic expressions to describe many functions succinctly, but if you're super visual like me, we can also gain powerful understanding from the ability to graph functions on a coordinate plane. Once we have the foundational toolbox of this chapter, we will be able to go on to specific types of functions for the rest of the book. At first, this may feel like learning just another weird language you have to memorize the rules of, but I want you to really try to absorb the essence of functions as machines that take inputs and outputs. The more you lift your gaze from the trees of notation and get your head around the forest of what's really happening, the better off you're going to be in Calc I and science courses. So really try to dig in!
