In this chapter, we review all the basic algebra skills that we need in order to manipulate and simplify expressions that have variables in them. The last chapter focused on dealing with literal numbers, but the #1 skill you need for future math and science courses is fluency in algebra when letters are used to represent quantities instead. We'll be going over concepts such as like terms, FOILing, factoring techniques of all varieties, and simplifying rational expressions legally. All of this is—and I cannot say this enough—absolutely vital to your ability to work with equations and functions. The reason I made you do everything by hand without a calculator in the last chapter, even though we were mostly just dealing with numbers, is because your calculator can't help you with a lot of these operations once letters get involved.

One thing to note is that the types of expressions I give you to practice on are inspired by exactly what we do in Calculus I or applications of math. I want you to be ready to simplify difference quotients before you get to Calc I. I want you to be able to solve for a variable stuck in an exponent before you study time value of money in your actuarial science class. You have to factor the heck out of polynomials for a solid chunk of Calc I, so we're going to do a lot of those here too. Don't worry, the tools I'm forcing you to store in your toolbox will actually come in handy later. (I'm not that much of a masochist.)
